In the world of entrepreneurship, stories of individuals who rise from humble beginnings to achieve global recognition are truly inspiring. One such story is that of Ritesh Agarwal, an Indian entrepreneur and the founder and CEO of OYO Hotels & Homes. It is a renowned hospitality company operating in over 80 countries worldwide. He is now set to take on a new role as a judge on the popular reality television show, Shark Tank India, for its upcoming third season, making him the youngest shark on the panel.
Ritesh Agarwal’s journey began in the quaint town of Bissam Cuttack, nestled in the state of Odisha, India. He was born into a family of modest entrepreneurs who ran a small business in Southern Orissa. Ritesh’s passion for coding first took root when he was just eight years old. His days were filled with the pursuit of knowledge, as he immersed himself in the world of software development.
Early Life:-
As a teenager, Ritesh was not content with merely honing his coding skills. He decided to take matters into his own hands and embarked on a venture to sell SIM cards in a small Indian town. This endeavor not only allowed him to earn and brought him one step closer to realizing his dream of becoming a businessman. After completing his education at St. John’s Senior Secondary School, moves to Delhi, where he believed his entrepreneurial dreams could take flight.
Ritesh Agarwal’s pursuit of knowledge led him to enroll in the University of London’s International Program at the prestigious Indian School of Business and Finance. However, he soon came to a pivotal realization – what he truly desired was not a mere academic certificate but real-world experience. He found himself gravitating towards events and conferences where he had the opportunity to interact with accomplished business owners. It was during this period that Ritesh made one of the most challenging decisions of his life: at the tender age of 17, he chose to drop out of college and dive headfirst into the world of entrepreneurship.
Ritesh’s entrepreneurial spirit burned brightly, matched only by his unwavering commitment to helping others. As a passionate traveler, he had experienced firsthand the challenges budget travelers faced in India when it came to finding affordable and quality accommodations. This glaring issue ignited the spark for his first major business venture, “Oravel Travels,” which was founded in 2011. Inspired by the model of Airbnb, Oravel Travels aimed to tackle this availability problem by establishing an online booking platform.
The Evolution into OYO Rooms
Ritesh’s entrepreneurial journey was marked by several pivots and rebranding efforts. Oravel Travels eventually transformed into what we know today as OYO Rooms in 2013. OYO Rooms has since grown to become one of the world’s largest hotel chains, with a staggering presence of over 23,000 hotels spanning 800 cities worldwide. Ritesh Agarwal’s remarkable journey is a testament to his resilience, adaptability, and relentless pursuit of excellence.
